<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Merry Christmas 2015! As usual, I spent the Christmas holiday dashing through airports so that I could spend time on the east coast with family and friends. This means my official dog tag has now logged 31 flights since joining my pack in November 2009. Wow, much air time!

Most adult shibas will be too large to fly in cabin, but if you are on the smaller size, or are still a puppy, you may be able to do so. You can see more images of me in my Celltei bag on previous trips in these posts:

This is an amazing addition to the air travel for dogs, as air-side pet relief areas are fairly nonexistent. The San Diego facility is located at Terminal 2 West between gates 46 and 47. It is a small, 75 sq ft space that has a fun fire hydrant and fake grass. Dog bags are available inside.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; text-align: justify;">Since Palm Springs, California is just a short drive (about 2 1/2 hours) from San Diego, I vacation in Palm Springs throughout the year for quick getaways. For this trip, we opted to rent a house through VRBO <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; text-align: justify;">so we would have plenty of room to relax. While I usually stay in hotels when we travel, vacation rentals are a great way to get more room and privacy. Many VRBO properties are dog friendly, just check in advance before you make a reservation to confirm the details. - pet fee, size restrictions, etc.
Lodging Review: For spring 2015, I went on two vacations to Big Bear Lake, California and stayed in my own little cabin each time. The best way to stay in Big Bear is definitely to get a vacation rental cabin. The cabin we selected was located in the Meadow Park neighborhood and is within walking distance to the lake and restaurants, including the Grizzly Manor Cafe located at 41268 Big Bear Boulevard. While not dog friendly, the Grizzly Manor Cafe is a Big Bear "must" for a truly "big" breakfast. Just make sure your people bring you back some bacon. For casual counter service dining with a dog friendly patio, check out Get the Burger which is located a short drive away on 42151 Big Bear Boulevard.

Nestled in the tall trees, our cabin was a 2 bedroom, 1 bath unit furnished with bear and ski motif throughout (one bedroom had a queen size bed and the other furnished with a twin over full size bunk bed). The cabin had a wood burning fireplace and stacked washer/dryer. While rustic in style, the cabin had 3 flat screen TVs and wifi access. The cabin is dog friendly with owner approval. For this trip, I brought my travel dog bed with me to make sure I was a "good" guest and we made sure everything was clean upon departure. The cabin and its location are both excellent. Being an urban city dog, it was fun to stay in a wood cabin and enjoy the adventure of mountain life and the fresh mountain air. We rented our cabin through VRBO; it can be found directly at this link for more information and rental details.
June 2, 2015 and I am 6 years old. Living life as a Southern California shiba definitely has its perks. While I love to travel all over the US, there are so many fun adventures to have right here in California. For my birthday surprise, my people took me to Big Bear Lake to spend the long weekend in my very own cabin. Be sure to check the next blog post for an update on that special cabin adventure.

Now that I am 6 years old, I have been weighing in between 18-19 lbs of pure soft fluffiness. Life is good. 100% shiba approved.
2014 was a great year all around. Christmas 2014 found me darting through airports again to visit friends and family on the east coast. At this point, I've now logged 29 flights since I joined my pack in November 2009. The east coast was very cold and there was even some snow for me to play in again. High paw! As 2015 begins, I am looking forward to sharing new adventures with all of my followers. But for now, now that I am back in San Diego, I need to take a quick nap so I'm ready for 2015!

The hotel features 87 guest rooms and cottages nestled around 11 acres of beautifully landscaped grounds. The hotel has a variety of unique cottages which make for a private and luxurious stay. The hotel is dog friendly and charges a $35 per night fee for dog under 50 lbs and a $50 per night fee for dogs over 50 lbs.

For this stay, we stayed in a private, freestanding one-bedroom cottage called the Vista Suite. The Vista Suite cottages are located higher up on the hillside and have truly spectacular views of Sedona's red rocks. The units feature a living room with a gas fireplace, separate bedroom with a king sized bed, and bathroom with an outdoor shower cedar shower. The expansive redwood deck on the cottage was fully enclosed (no steps going to the ground) and appointed with comfy patio furniture for taking in the mountain views. Our unit was cottage #98 and it was the end cottage which gave us plenty of privacy. As the hotel is spread out, at times, you may need to call for a golf cart to pick you up. I highly recommend this for when you need a lift.

There is much to do around the hotel, including walking along the banks of Oak Creek or taking a short drive to do some magnificent hiking in Sedona. During this stay, I hiked up to Devil's Bridge. The hike up to the top of Devil's Bridge includes very steep, step-like, rock climbing and isn't recommended for most dogs. However, for very agile dogs like me, the hike to the top is truly amazing. Be sure to wear a very solid harness if you opt to do this hike. And since my friends and family are all over the United States, that means I sometimes need to fly to get in all the fun. When I was a little puppy (not quite 6 months old and not quite 8 lbs), my people started flying with me. Now that I'm five years old, I've logged 25 airplane flights and a gazillion miles in the sky. I always fly in cabin at my people's feet and mostly just sleep during the flights. My people keep a constant watch on me, making sure I am okay and get sips of water along the way. I travel in a custom made Celltei bag: Celltei link.

For this trip, my people tried out a new Adaptil D.A.P. (dog appeasing pheremone) collar on me to see if it would keep me chill during all the loud noises and general commotion of travel. The disposable collars are supposed to last 4 weeks. Overall we didn't notice any difference - good or bad - but it seems like a potential option to try if you are worried about how your dog will handle a plane flight. You can check out additional details here: Adaptil link.
Even though the west coast is my super happy home, I have a great time on the east coast too. They have great trees and grass and tons of bugs to chase. During the summer months, I usually help with the yard work which is especially fun, because I don't have my own yard back in San Diego.
Have you heard about the annual Shiba Prom? Shiba Prom is a volunteer nonprofit organization of Shiba Inu owners and enthusiasts united together for charitable purposes. Started in 2012, a group of passionate people teamed up to develop the first Shiba Prom which took place as a virtual fund raiser in June 2012. Their mission is focused on ending the unnecessary suffering of Shiba Inus (and mixes) that have been abandoned, neglected, or denied adequate medical care due to lack of funding. The pilot year was an amazing success with nearly 200 animals (and their people) participating online to raise over $4,000 for five animal rescues.

In 2013, the second virtual Shiba Prom was held. It was even bigger and more amazing than 2012. The 2013 Shiba Prom raised over $22,000 for 11 rescues. Seriously, wow! No prom is complete without a dance party, and each year we hit the virtual dance floor to bust our moves to the tunes provided by pawsome DJs. In 2013, the Shiba Prom Committee even gave me an honorable mention for being the Shiba Strut Queen on the dance floor. (My Shiba Prom 2013 highlights)

Fast forward to June 28, 2014, and the third Shiba Prom had over 285 attendees (meowies can attend too). The event was an 8 hour online party that featured dancing, fun contests, gift baskets, cool prom swag, and voting for the Prom King and Queen. A team of 3 different DJs played the rockin tunes on the dance floor throughout the day/night- David Bowie the dog, DJ Zeus Ruper, and the Evil Firefox Flygirls. Building off of the momentum and success of the first two years, the 2014 Shiba Prom hit truly unprecedented success with over $42,000 raised in net proceeds. Total BOW WOW WOW!

While you don't need a "date" to attend the prom, each year I've attended with my bestie Prince Zuko. If you aren't following him yet, be sure to check him out. Not only is he a cool California shiba (like me) but he serves as the official barktender at the prom. Don't know what I mean? Well, you better stay tuned for the 2015 Prom to find out what it's all about. Oh, and about that dancing I'm known for? Yep, the pawsome Prom Committee recognized my fancy foot work and dance moves again in 2014 with the "Booty Pop" award. *Paws in the air* I hope you join next year because it sure feels good to help so many shibas!

Hello world! Today, June 2, 2014 is my 5th birthday. Looking back, I've had 5 great years with my people in San Diego. I hoped you've enjoyed following my blog, watching me grow up, and reading about all of my travel adventures across the United States. Here's a quick look back from my previous birthdays.

Hotel Reviews: Throughout the year we visit the lovely Viceroy Hotel and Resort, Palm Springs, California for a relaxing weekend in one of their villas (the resort's free standing one or two bedroom private cottages). I've done quite a few reviews about the Viceroy (see links at bottom). The Viceroy Palm Springs is located at 415 South Belardo Drive which is just one block off of the happening South Palm Canyon Drive. The villas are located around the property on either the Regency Courtyard or the Fountain Courtyard side. For this visit, we stayed in the Dorrington Villa #507 which is a one bedroom villa located on the Fountain Courtyard side. Each villa features a living room (with fireplace), dining room, fully equipped kitchen, one or two bedrooms, one or two bathrooms, and private patio.

The layouts vary by unit and so do their private outdoor areas. For instance, #507 had a small narrow tile patio; whereas, #504 and #506 have a tiled patio area plus a grassy yard- perfect for dogs! The Viceroy charges a $100 nonrefundable pet fee and allows pets under 40 lbs and definitely makes pets feel very welcome during their stay. Pets are even welcome to dine on the patio at Citron restaurant and relax poolside.

As far as best villas for dogs, #506 (two bedroom) and #504 (one bedroom) both have fully enclosed private, grassy yards which make them really nice for pet friendly travel. For more pictures and reviews from my previous stays at the Viceroy Palm Springs, be sure to check out these links:

Hotel Reviews: Each year, we visit the lovely Viceroy Hotel and Resort, Palm Springs, California for a relaxing weekend in one of their villas (which are the resort's free standing private cottages). Located on 415 South Belardo Drive, just one block off the main drag in Palm Springs, the Viceroy is a wonderful pet friendly resort.

For this visit, we stayed in Sovereign Villa #506 which was a charming 2 bedroom, 2 bath unit located in a quiet location on the Fountain Court side of the resort. The unit also featured a kitchen, dining room and living room with a gas fireplace. Sovereign Villa #506 is the only 2 bedroom villa on the property with an enclosed grass backyard (versus a patio) which made it great for dogs. It's the best 2 bedroom for staying with a dog. If you're looking for a 1 bedroom villas, check out unit #504 which is next door and also has a fully enclosed grassy yard. The hotel charges a one time $100 pet fee for the duration of your stay and allows pets under 40 lbs.
The Viceroy has 3 pools on site. During this visit, we noticed a new sign at the Presidio Pool: No Pets Allowed at Presidio Pool. This was an unexpected change, but overall the resort still remained highly pet friendly and I give it a paws up!
Have you heard about Shiba Prom? Shiba Prom is a volunteer nonprofit organization of Shiba Inu owners and enthusiasts formed for charitable purposes. Their goal is to support other charitable organizations involved in the rescue of Shiba Inus (and Shiba-mixes) by distributing funds for care of rescued Shiba Inus, creating greater awareness and understanding of the Shiba Inu breed, and harnessing the power of social media to inspire, promote and lead creative fundraising events that benefit Shibas in need of homes and/or medical care.

In 2012 a group of dedicated people teamed up and leveraged talents to develop the first Shiba Prom which took place as a virtual fundraiser in June. Yes, there even was a dance party! More on that later. The first year was an amazing success, with nearly 200 animals (and their people) participating online to raise over $4,000 for five rescues.

In 2013, the second virtual Shiba Prom was held. It was even bigger and better than 2012. The 2013 Shiba Prom raised over $22,000 for 11 rescues. Wow. Great Big Wow! I went to the virtual prom with my shiba friend Prince Zuko. If you aren't already following him, be sure to check him out. He makes a mean bacon shot. (You'll have to attend 2014 Shiba Prom to know what I mean.) I am proud to have participated both years and to have helped raise awareness for the breed and help raise money for Shibas in need. Now, about that dancing....

Each year the Shiba Prom, of course, has a virtual dance party. Animals (yes, meowies are allowed too) hit the virtual dance floor and move to the pawsome beats pre-selected by a team of Shiba Prom DJs. With some speakers on your computer (you just follow the supplied song playlist) and some fast typing (to describe your dance moves) you and many other Shibas can bust a move on the dance floor. For 2013, I even received an honorable mention certificate from the Shiba Prom Committee for being the Shiba Strut Queen.
Hello world! Today, June 2, 2013, is my 4th birthday! Today my people gave me pawsome new toys and some of my favorite treats from Zuke's and Primal Pet Foods. Looking back, I've been on so many adventures since my people came to get me back in 2009. I hope you've enjoyed following my blog and reading about all of my travel adventures. The hotel includes a 10-story tower and 6-story wing with guest rooms and suites, as well as 32 private garden bungalow accommodations. For this stay, we opted to stay in bungalow #166, a Signature King Bungalow unit which was 335 sq feet with a private entrance and small private dining patio. The hotel also has larger more expensive, two-story bungalows which we did not check out for this stay.

For onsite dining, Fairmont Miramar has Fig Restaurant, however dogs aren't allowed to dine on the patio. Fortunately, the hotel has outstanding 24-hour room service so we had our meals delivered to our bungalow patio. And the hotel is located in a perfect area of Santa Monica for walking to hundreds of other dining options. For simple casual dining, Tender Greens is right down the block and had a nice dog friendly patio area.

The bungalow units were very private and quiet which made for a relaxing stay for me and my people. The hotel was comfortable for me with plenty of nice grassy areas outside of my room for walking around and also in the neighborhood along Ocean Avenue. The neighborhood vibe is hip and filled with many people riding bicycles and dogs. The Fairmont Miramar is truly notable in that it allows dogs to stay with their people through their Pets Always Welcome (PAW) program with no fee. High-paw! At check-in you are asked to sign the pet policy and are supposed to be provided with complimentary pet amenities, including bowls, bed. etc. We signed the pet policy, but weren't offered any special amenities, so be sure to ask if you need something. I was also in Santa Monica back in September 2012 which you can check out Santa Monica.

Hotel Reviews: Casa Madrona Hotel and Spa is located on 801 Bridgeway in the heart of historic downtown Sausalito, California. The hotel currently has 63 guest rooms which include either historic hillside cottage rooms or contemporary rooms (although I understand they are in the process of adding more hillside accommodations). We stayed in #304 which is a room with a balcony in the hillside cottage section. The hotel's dog policy allows dogs up to 50 lbs to stay with a one time $100 pet fee, per dog. At check-in my people signed the "usual" canine agreement. We weren't provided with any special pet amenities - dog beds, bowls, treats, toys, bags, etc. - but I understand that the hotel has some things, so ask at the front desk if you need something. The valet stand has biscuits; swing by and snag a few. Nom!

The hillside cottage rooms are good for guests staying with dogs, as they have easy access to the street via a side staircase. We didn't have to go in or out through the main lobby to access our room for the duration of our stay, which was very convenient. The balcony on our 3rd floor room was enclosed (solid walls and a railing) and not connected to any neighboring balconies, so it provided a nice, safe place for me to relax and peek out. Overall our room was nice, but it was rather small for our 3-night stay. Next time, we will check out their new accommodations to see if they provide a better space.

Sausalito is a charming bayside town. It is very pet friendly and there were plenty of grassy areas for me. While you are out, you will surely run into people walking around with their dogs. I even got to meet a pawsome shiba named Margot when I was out for a walk one day!
For dog friendly dining options at Casa Madrona, you can order room service through Poggio or you can dine on their sidewalk patio. There are also many great restaurants within easy walking distance, right on Bridgeway that you should check out. For two "not to miss" restaurants, be sure to go to Copita Tequileria y Comida located at 739 Bridgeway which has amazing food and drinks for your people. They have a very nice, covered outdoor patio area for dogs to hang with their people. Copita even does "take out" so while we stayed, my people grabbed food and brought it back to our hotel. I give this place a big paws up! Also, check out Napa Valley Burger Company just down the block at 670 Bridgeway. They have 3 outdoor sidewalk patio tables that provide dog friendly dining. While it's not an "enclosed" space, I was able to relax comfortably along the wall side and check out the people and dogs walking by. As soon as I sat down with my people, a server immediately brought over a little bowl of water for me without us having to ask. Nice! And their burgers....which I got to taste...are also not to be missed. Paws up to Sausalito, California!
On April 5, 2013 my shiba friend Phineas was tragically hit by a car and passed away near his home in New Jersey. He was my cool shiba friend who had the most amazing gentle spirit. Despite the fact that Phin lived 3,000 miles away on the other coast, I made sure we got to meet and play. When I visited him, he shared his home, his toys, and even his cheese supply with me. He was the sweetest playful shiba, I've ever met. In honor of his life, dogs and meowies everywhere have been posting pictures of themselves with mustaches (in reference to a pawsome photo previously taken of Phineas with a mustache.) Photo credit: Sal Petruzelli Marino.

Hotel Review: The Hotel Valley Ho is a pet friendly hotel located in Scottsdale, Arizona. Originally opened in 1956, the Valley Ho was a popular Hollywood hideaway and still features a mid-century modern aesthetic. After updates, the hotel now features a seven-story tower in addition to garden and pool side accommodations. For this stay, we stayed in a one-bedroom Tower Suite which was located in the seven-story tower building. Our Tower Suite unit was expansive and featured a fully equipped kitchen, living room, washer/dryer and private balcony. We checked out unit 601 which was on the pool side and ultimately decided to stay in unit 504 with the Camelback Mountain view. When we arrived our unit already had my pet amenities in place in the kitchen for me: a dog bowl, dog treats and a special pet sign to hang on the outside of our door. Nice!

One of the best things about the Valley Ho is that they do not charge a pet fee and they pride themselves on being very pet friendly through membership with the National Pet-Friendly Hotel Association. I felt welcomed at the hotel and was only restricted from the pool area and inside the restaurant. However, the patio area of Cafe ZuZu is dog friendly and has breakfast, lunch and dinner dining options (in addition to room service). Around the hotel there were plenty of grassy areas for me to explore and with its prime location in Old Town Scottsdale there were lots of things for me check out within walking distance.
If you're planning to stay at the Hotel Valley Ho with a dog, I would recommend checking out the Terrace Suite units which are located in the lower two-story building. Unlike our room in the seven-story tower, these units don't have kitchens but instead have huge, more usable balconies. The balconies in the tower building can pose some challenges for smaller dogs, as the balconies are all connected and there is a space between the divider walls, so very inquisitive small dogs could very easily squeeze through and be on your neighbor's balcony in a second.

For my new blog readers, I'm Tokyo and I'm a 3 1/2 year old Shiba Inu girl. I have a pawsome life in southern California and get to travel frequently with my people. I'm fabulous in my own right. However, there's another dog around who has been getting a lot of air time. Boo is a 6 year old tiny little Pomeranian, considered the cutest dog in the world. Boo has merchandise, books and even a life-size Gund stuffed animal in his likeness. Boo has been interviewed by celebrities and is the official pet liaison of Virgin Airlines. And with over 6.5 million "likes" on Facebook, Boo is clearly the most popular dog around. My grandma even bought her own Boo stuffed animal. What the bark?

With all that attention, I figured I should see what's going on with this little dog breed. According to my research Pomeranians are small compact, intelligent dogs, with outgoing temperaments that are eager to learn and love to please. They are an energetic toy breed that enjoys attention from people. Poms (as they are often called) range in weight from 3 lbs to 7 lbs. They are also an independent, head strong dog that can be prone to barking. They also shed a lot and require daily grooming to prevent matting. Some people even say that Poms have a fox-like appearance. Um, no.

Happy New Year! Looking back, I had a pawsome 2012 filled with many travel adventures. 2012 had a little bit of everything. There was the beach, snow, the hot desert and foggy hills of San Francisco. In total, I did 7 airplane flights in 2012 - visited the east coast 3 times - plus many road trips.

For 2012 California adventures, I traveled to Santa Barbara and stayed at San Ysidro Ranch, which I highly recommend for luxury pet-friendly accommodations. The ranch has private free standing cottages and they even displayed my name on a wooden sign next to the front door to welcome me. I also went to Palm Springs twice and stayed at the Viceroy Palm Springs. The Viceroy Palm Springs is definitely an amazing resort for hip dogs and people. It remains my go-to southern California resort for chillaxin with my people. I also visited Santa Monica and Los Angeles and checked-in at the uber posh Hotel Bel-Air. The iconic Hotel Bel-Air originally opened in 1946 and goes out of their way for pampering pooches and their people. Trust me. In addition, I also traveled up to northern California to visit friends and family in San Francisco and stayed at the historic Cavallo Point Lodge in Sausalito. You can check out my hotel reviews for additional details.

Be sure to stay tuned to see what 2013 brings!

Since 2009, I have packed my bags to spend Christmas on the east coast visiting family and friends. This year was no different. Since I'm a west coast shiba, this means I have to hop in my custom Celltei travel carrier and fly across country with my people. It's a long flight, but I fly in cabin with my people and they make sure I'm as comfy as possible. In total, I've now logged 23 flights and I'm only 3 1/2 years old. And when we finally got there, Christmas didn't disappoint; there was plenty of fluffy white snow for me to dig in. I hope wherever you spent your Christmas it was just as fun!

Hotel Reviews: Being a California shiba is pawsome. The weather is perfect year round, many places are dog friendly and there is always something fun to do. Like this past weekend, I spent the weekend at the lovely Viceroy Palm Springs, California relaxing with my people. The Vicerory Palm Springs is super dog friendly and is super posh for people too. The onsite restaurant Citron, even allows dogs to dine with their people on their outdoor patio. I've already written about the Viceroy Palm Springs on two previous trips which you can check out at the links below.

Viceroy Palm Springs (December 2011) - Dorrington villa #103

The resort has a variety of accomodations but the villas are the best places for people staying with dogs because they are free-standing one or two bedroom houses with enclosed private patios. Paws up!

Happy Thanksgiving! In between posing for pictures, I've been busy packing my suitcase for another trip to the east coast for a holiday adventure. Since 2009, I've flown on an airplane to the east coast to spend Thanksgiving celebrating with friends and family. Truth is, I have so much to be thankful for, but many pawsome dogs don't have their own families. If you want to help in some way, check out the links below to some great rescues and amazing shibas. Santa Monica is a vibrant beach city just miles outside of the hubbub of Los Angeles. It's a "don't miss" destination if you are in Southern California. I wore my pink camo EzyDog harness while treking around to make sure I looked uber stylish, incase the puperazzi were out.

While the sandy beach area is not dog friendly in Santa Monica, don't be discouraged. There is still plenty to do and explore. Leashed dogs are allowed on the Santa Monica Pier and surrounding boardwalks. And the nice part is that you won't get scared or run over by bicycles while you're out exploring, because they have separate designated lanes for walking and biking. Pawsome! You'll also find ample grassy areas adjacent to the beach and plenty of pet friendly hotels, like Shutters on the Beach in the area. While I haven't stayed at Shutters for a personal review, be sure to let me know what you think if you have! You can get more information about pet friendly things to do in Santa Monica through this link.
